Can you remember your first time volunteering at RMHOC? Were you surprised to learn about us and see what we do?
The first time was a Meal of Love. We came in with a group of friends to make dinner. We were blown away. Not only what the House offered, but by all the staff and volunteers that have been working there for years. It was very touching to meet so many passionate people that really care for the families.
What made you want to volunteer/ give back to RMHOC?
We have a close group of friends that get together for dinners, salsa dancing, travel, etc. Multiple friends brought up interest in volunteering. After some research, we decided to try a few. We fell in love with the House the moment we stepped through the doors, met the families, and heard their stories.
I found out something very interesting a few years into volunteering. My grandfather was a doctor and my grandmother was a nurse both in Albuquerque. When my cousin found out we are volunteering for the House she asked if I knew our grandparents would take her volunteering with them to the RMH in Albuquerque. I had no idea. We randomly picked the same charity to work with that my grandparents picked. I still get goosebumps telling the story.
How does it feel when you volunteer/ give back to RMHOC?
There is nothing else in the world like it. The families are going through the worst experience in their life. You can see it in their faces how much they appreciate what the volunteers do. There is no other experience like it. And money could never buy the feeling we receive.
What's a favorite memory you have from volunteering at RMHOC?
My favorite moment was receiving a comment from a mother of a child in the hospital. She said it had been months since she had a home-cooked meal. And that it was nice to have some sort of normalcy with everything that was going on in her life with her child.
What would you like to say to the families that are staying at RMHOC right now?
We are here for you. We may not ever fully understand what you are going through, but know you have a huge community of people to support you and help in any small way we can. We know it can be hard to ask for help, but please do. We are standing by.
Thank you Robert and Erica. We are so blessed by your service and dedication to our families.
