Our mission at the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southern California (herein referred to as RMHCSC or the Chapter) is to provide comfort, care and support to children and families in Southern California. RMHCSC operates seven Ronald McDonald Houses, and three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, along with Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.

Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times was founded in 1982 to create a positive, long-lasting impact on children with cancer and their families by providing cost-free, medically supported year-round camp programs.

Position Summary
The Program Staff Position is directly involved in the planning and delivery of the summer programs. Additionally, the position is responsible for the orientation, training, and support of volunteers in delivering the camp experience.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The position includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the planning and implementing of engaging and fun summer camp activities and living group experiences for the campers.
    • Meet Camp outcomes for each participant in the delivery of the camp program and activities.
    • Maintain or exceeds American Camp Association accreditation standards in the delivery of the program.
    • Assist in designing, preparing, and documentation of operation, safety, and emergency procedures for camp activities as assigned.
    • Meet or exceed previous summer program activity evaluation scores.
    • Provide the Camp Director with mid-season and end-of-season recommendations for activity improvements.
  • Training and Supervision of activity and cabin counselor volunteers.
    • Train and supervise volunteer staff in managing cabin living groups and the execution of educational and recreational activities.
    • Provide volunteer orientation and training in roles, responsibilities, program safety, and emergency procedures.
    • Provide training and supervision to ensure acceptable or excellent performance ratings for volunteer staff as assigned.
    • Conduct and document weekly goal-setting meetings, performance observations, and performance evaluations for each volunteer staff member assigned.
  • Maintain Program Safety
    • Identify and report potential risks/ hazards related to the operation of the Camp program experience.
    • Enforce established safety practices, regulations, emergency procedures, and appropriate camper/staff supervision ratios.
    • Ensure routine checks of program areas and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Ensure first aid equipment is available and in good repair
  • Equipment and Supplies
    • Oversee the use of program equipment and supplies and maintain accurate inventories.
    • Instruct and oversee the safe operation and use of equipment and supplies.
    • Oversee the cleanliness of program areas and equipment storage.
    • Pack and store equipment at the end of each session. Make written recommendations for equipment and supplies for the following season.
  • Member of the Program Leadership Team
    • Attend leadership meetings with other directors and activity staff
    • Assist in the set-up and implementation of evening activities as assigned
    • Assist in the design and implementation of trainings for Staff Development & Training for each Camp session.

Education, Work Experience, Knowledge, and Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in outdoor recreation programming; supervisory experience preferred.
  • General knowledge and hands-on experience with program management and youth development strategies.
  • Strong understanding of recreational leadership, particularly within the special needs community.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexible schedule availability, including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Must complete all the required Adventure training prior to summer.
  • Onsite availability is REQUIRED from June 2nd to mid-August for camp operations.

Reasoning Ability
Strong problem-solving abilities, with a focus on overcoming challenges. Ability to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where the person must rely on their judgment, adaptability, and resourcefulness to find effective solutions.

Language Skills
The ideal candidate will have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions in English, whether provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. They should demonstrate proficiency in interpreting bills and work proposals, writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, or governmental regulations, as well as strong skills in presenting information and responding to questions from diverse audiences. Clear communication of facts and recommendations in both oral and written formats is essential. Candidates with multilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

Mathematical and Computer Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts, including basic math, percentages, discounts, and annual budget needs along with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Camp volunteers

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A valid California Driver’s License and a clean driving record are required for operating company vehicles, if needed. Camping Credentials/Memberships and holds or able to old basic First Aid/CPR/AED certifications. Must be willing to participate in the required safety training.

Physical Demands
This role is physically demanding and requires stamina for extended periods of focus, high levels of engagement, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk distances on uneven ground in rustic exposed outdoor environment; use hands to finger, handle, pull or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

For items exceeding 25 pounds, team lifting techniques should be used, and assistance from a team member is required. Push/pull carts should be utilized when necessary to ensure safety, and employees must not attempt to lift, push, pull, or carry objects that are too heavy.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, you must be willing to work independently, outdoors in varying temperatures, irregular hours/shifts, weekends, and holidays, as needed. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

You will be considered an "at-will" employee, meaning that either you or RMHCSC may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice, except as otherwise required by any applicable notice provisions or RMHCSC’s written policies.
