Garrett Asanuma, Past RMHCSC Scholarship Recipient

Garrett Asanuma was always destined for big things.

As a high school student in Simi Valley, he earned the congressional medal for his avid community service and role as a director of youth leadership with the Simi Academy of Soccer. In 2004, his leadership skills and outstanding grades helped him win a scholarship from the RMHC/Asia Scholarship program and a spot at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

After completing his undergraduate studies in molecular pharmacology, Garrett went on to earn a Masters of Science in Biotechnology & Bioinformatics. Since finishing his studies, Garrett has remained in the area — today he is the director of process improvement at Thermo Fisher Scientific, where he helps provide analytical testing methods for new transplant technologies.

Garrett is grateful for the incredible opportunity afforded by his RMHC scholarship. And he has continued to live up to the qualities that earned him so much recognition in high school. He volunteers regularly with friends, packing comfort kits for the homeless over the holidays. Garrett is also an active participant in Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
