In Kevin's chair, our RMHOC families find themselves again.
“My name is Kevin Osborn, and I’ve been a hairstylist in Orange County, California, for the past 30 years. For the last 18 months, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering every Monday in the salon at Ronald McDonald House®, providing haircuts and styling for parents and family members whose children are in the hospital.
Like many people, I had heard of Ronald McDonald House over the years, but I didn’t truly understand the incredible work they do until my family became involved. My daughter, my husband, and I volunteered at special events whenever we could. Then, when I learned they were adding a salon as part of their expansion, they asked if I would oversee it and volunteer every Monday. My answer was an immediate yes.
Looking back, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Coming every week is a commitment, but the truth is, I think I need it just as much as the families do. Most parents don’t come in because they’re worried about their hair. They’re focused entirely on their children. Ronald McDonald House gently reminds them that taking care of themselves matters too. When they sit in my chair, it’s often the first time they’ve paused to think about themselves in days or even weeks.
My hope isn’t just that they leave with a haircut they like. It’s that when they look in the mirror, they see a little bit of themselves again. For a few moments, they can feel refreshed, cared for, and reminded that they matter too. The conversations we share are something I’ll carry with me forever. I’ve laughed with parents, cried with parents, and been humbled by their strength. Every Monday, I’m reminded how resilient people can be in the face of unimaginable circumstances.
Without question, volunteering at Ronald McDonald House has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I truly believe that anyone who gives their time in any capacity will receive far more than they could ever imagine. It’s an extraordinary organization, and I’m incredibly grateful to be a small part of its mission.”
