Tim’s medical journey began before he was born when he was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare genetic disorder that left him without a functioning immune system. Shortly after birth, he suffered a stroke that resulted in significant physical challenges. At just two months old, Tim underwent a life-saving bone marrow transplant to rebuild his immune system. His older sister, Alexandra, became his donor, giving her little brother the extraordinary gift of a second chance at life.
Today, the Vang family regularly travels to Long Beach so Tim can participate in intensive therapy at the NAPA Center. Through Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI), physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, Tim continues to make remarkable progress following his stroke. With every session, he reaches new milestones from learning to feed himself and communicate through sign language to finding his voice and becoming more expressive. His bright, determined, and outgoing personality shines through in everything he does.
Beyond therapy, Tim finds moments of joy at the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House. He and his sister, Alexandra, can often be found laughing together in the children’s playroom, exploring the backyard, or spending time with the Pet Prescription therapy dogs. These simple moments bring comfort, happiness, and a sense of normalcy to their family’s journey.
For the Vang family, the heart of the Long Beach Ronald McDonald House is the dining room. It is where families gather to share meals, encourage one another, and find comfort in a community that truly understands the challenges of caring for a seriously ill child. The friendships, kindness, and support they have experienced have transformed the House into much more than a place to stay it has become a true home away from home.
