RMHCSC operates seven Ronald McDonald Houses, and three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, along with Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.

Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times was founded in 1982 to create a positive, long-lasting impact on children with cancer and their families by providing cost-free, medically supported year-round camp programs.

Position Summary: The Adventure Program Lead Facilitator is directly involved in delivering the Summer Adventure program. Additionally, the position is ultimately responsible for the safety and quality of the Adventure experience. The incumbent will be lead Safety on all Adventure activities and supervises and supports Adventure volunteers (including the Alpine Tower Ropes Course).

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The position shall include but is not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the planning and provide leadership in the execution of a challenging and fun Adventure Program experience for the campers.
    • Meet Camp outcomes for each participant in the execution of the Adventure program.
    • Maintain or exceeds American Camp Association accreditation standards in the delivery of the program.
    • Assist in designing, preparing, and documentation of operation, safety, and emergency procedures for camp activities as assigned.
    • Provide the Camp Director with mid-season and end-of-the-season recommendations for program improvements.
  • Support and Supervise Adventure Volunteer Counselors.
    • Leads Adventure Planning meetings at each session
    • Ensures that Volunteer Adventure Counselors are working within their individual level of competency
    • Provide volunteer orientation and training in roles, responsibilities, program safety, and emergency procedures.
    • Conduct and document weekly goal-setting meetings, performance observations, and performance evaluations for each volunteer Adventure staff member.
  • Maintain Program Safety
    • Identify and report potential risks/ hazards related to the operation of the Camp program experience.
    • Enforce established safety practices, regulations, emergency procedures, and appropriate camper/staff supervision ratios.
    • Knowledge of Adventure program safety rules and emergency procedures
    • Lead response in an emergency situation
    • Ability to be trained to perform a high-course rescue when needed
    • Ability to perform an emotional rescue when needed
    • Conduct routine checks of program areas and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Ensure first aid equipment is available and in good repair
    • Completes all necessary forms and reports
  • Equipment and Supplies
    • Oversee equipment use and maintain accurate inventories and inspection logs
    • Responsible for the cleaning & organizing of the Adventure shed and equipment before, during, and after the summer season.
    • Assist Volunteer Adventure Staff in daily equipment checks for safety, cleanliness, and good condition.
    • Teach and monitor the proper use of equipment
  • Member of the Program Leadership Team
    •  Attend leadership meetings with other directors and activity staff
    • Assist in the set-up and implementation of other activities as assigned
    • Assist in the design and implementation of trainings for Staff Development & Training for each Camp session.

Education, Work Experience, Knowledge, and Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Minimum of 3 years of outdoor recreation program experience, including supervisory responsibilities
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Preferred: Training and experience as a lead facilitator on an Alpine Tower
  • Experience in Adventure programming and program management
  • Strong understanding of Adventure-based recreational programs within the special needs community
  • Knowledge of and experience with youth development strategies and competencies
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, and the public
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for diverse audiences
  • Ability to perform well under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Flexible availability including weekdays, weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Must be available to complete Adventure training prior to summer and to live and work onsite at Camp from early June (Memorial Day weekend start is a plus) through the end of August

Reasoning Ability
Strong problem-solving abilities, with a focus on overcoming challenges. Ability to deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where the person must rely on their judgment, adaptability, and resourcefulness to find effective solutions.

Language Skills
The ideal candidate will have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions in English, whether provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. They should demonstrate proficiency in interpreting bills and work proposals, writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, or governmental regulations, as well as strong skills in presenting information and responding to questions from diverse audiences. Clear communication of facts and recommendations in both oral and written formats is essential. Candidates with multilingual skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

Mathematical and Computer Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts, including basic math and percentages. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Excel. Proficiency in database software is a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Camp Volunteers

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: A valid California Driver’s License and a clean driving record are required for operating company vehicles, if needed for transporting staff or campers. Basic First Aid/CPR/AED certifications. Must be willing to participate in the required safety training.

This role is physically demanding and requires stamina for extended periods of focus, high levels of engagement, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk distances on uneven ground in rustic exposed outdoor environment; use hands to finger, handle, pull or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel; talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

For items exceeding 25 pounds, team lifting techniques should be used, and assistance from a team member is required. Push/pull carts should be utilized when necessary to ensure safety, and employees must not attempt to lift, push, pull, or carry objects that are too heavy.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, you must be willing to work independently, outdoors in varying temperatures, irregular hours/shifts, weekends, and holidays, as needed. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
