At Ronald McDonald House ® Orange County (RMHOC), we stand with families through their most challenging moments, including difficult diagnoses like childhood cancer. In recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honored to share Violet’s story.’
Violet loves singing and dancing along with the Disney princesses and spending time riding her little red bike. “She’s just a very angelic little girl, very caring and very loving. She’s always including everyone in any situation,” says her dad, Oscar.
Violet’s parents first noticed something was wrong when she slowly stopped doing the activities she loved to do. As her fatigue worsened and a rash appeared, they knew something wasn’t right. When they took Violet to the emergency room, they immediately knew it wasn’t a regular visit.
In August 2024, Violet was diagnosed with B-Cell Leukemia. At the time, RMHOC was still under construction and had not yet opened, but once the House became available, parents, Jessica and Oscar, were able to take advantage of the support it provided.
“When we did find out [RMHOC was open, it] was such a lifesaver for us,” says Violet’s mom, Jessica. The House became a home away from home, giving the family a place to rest and recharge. Jessica and Oscar took turns staying at the hospital and resting at the House, so they could continue supporting Violet throughout her treatment.
“We were able to come and relax...It’s just a breather because when moms and dads are in the hospital, it’s a lot…To take a little break to come over to the Ronald McDonald House to take that, even if it is five minutes or even hour, to go back to her that helps for the next 23 hours to be with her. That hour is priceless.”
After being admitted, Violet continued to stay at RMHOC when she was receiving daily treatments. One of her favorite places was the sensory room, where she could step away from the hospital environment and enjoy the lights, colors, and everything she could play with. Violet and her family formed close connections with staff, volunteers and families staying at the House.
“Here at Ronald McDonald House, they are like family to us now,” Jessica says. “They have a place in our heart for sure – a big place.”
Ronald McDonald House continues to support families navigating childhood cancer, ensuring they never have to go through it alone.
