Job Title: Camp Nurse Manager
Division: Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times
Reports To: Reports to Camp Program Director
FLSA Status: Exempt/ Part-Time (30 Hrs. per week)
Pay Range: $35K - $40K

Summary: The Camp Nursing Manager is responsible for the recruitment, orientation, education, and support of volunteer Med Shed staff. Additionally, responsibilities include the development of policies, procedures, and practice guidelines supporting camper/staff experiences and health while participating in Camp programs. The Manager provides guidance related to emerging issues in childhood/adolescent cancer care and long-term survivor issues with the potential to affect program planning for Camp. The Manager coordinates her/his responsibilities with the Medical Advisory Committee for those responsibilities that intersect with medicine and require collaborative practice. Participates in Camp Medial Advisory Committee meetings.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Med Shed Staffing

  • Recruitment of volunteer nurses through networking with hospitals, current Camp medical volunteers, and various organizations to meet the healthcare needs of camp sessions.
  • Develop a formalized plan for onboarding and training volunteer nursing staff to the Med Shed / Camp team.
  • Lead the screening, interviewing, and orientation of new Med Shed volunteer nursing staff.
  • Attend Camp Sessions as needed
  • Target institutions, conferences, programs, and organizations with the highest return of volunteer nurse participation and represent Camp within those opportunities for recruitment of nurse volunteers
  • Identify novel sources of recruitment whenever possible

Camp Session Support

  • Coordinates and participates in the review (including calls to parents/caregivers) of medical/pharmaceutical needs for campers prior to each youth session.
  • Coordinates/ executes system for MAR and needs lists for registration and medication administration for Med Shed Staff.
  • Responsible for onsite nursing staffing during all sessions; minimum attendance at all summer sessions of at least Day 1 & 2., and attend other Camp sessions as needed for staffing.
  • Coordinate with Unit Directors/Program Director to develop care/action plans for campers with prior history of needing special attention while at Camp.
  • Meet with Camp session Med Shed teams or session charge nurse before each session to download notes re: individual camper needs and after each session to debrief the session.

Med Shed Policies and Procedures

  • Organize and maintain Med Shed day to day operational guidelines and procedures
  • Maintain inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment.
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
  • Review and update Camp healthcare plans, policies, protocols, and procedures annually with physician leadership as needed, including but not limited to communicable disease protocols, treatment protocols, medication administration, and emergency transportation procedures/evacuation procedures for camper meds and travel supplies.
  • In conjunction with MD staff of the advisory board, evaluate the feasibility of the development of care guidelines appropriate for incorporation of PNP coverage in lieu of MD staff for family camp sessions
  • Perform annual review of medications to be stocked in Med Shed in conjunction with Camp Medical Advisory Committee Chair

Camp Program Support

  • Assist Camp Directors with preparing documentation and Med Shed environment for camp accreditations, ACA and COCA.
  • Meet with Program Director and staff at regular intervals to discuss upcoming programming plans with potential healthcare implications
  • Communicate regularly with RN volunteers, Camp Directors, Executive Director, Family Relations and Recruitment Coordinator, and participate as a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for ongoing assessment of camper needs
  • Support with Camp Directors & Family Support Services to develop plans & resources around mental health support at Camp for campers and staff.
  • Serves as primary contact for any medical questions from families, campers, and staff pertaining to eligibility for Camp. Along with the MD committee chair, is the primary resource for decisions regarding the appropriateness of a child’s attendance at camp
  • Review camper log sheets from each session to identify possible trends in injury or illness

Education and Work Experience

  • RN license - California required
  • Minimum of BSN required
  • At least 3 years of experience in pediatric nursing (inpatient and/or outpatient), preferably in hematology-oncology or emergency departments.
  • Prior experience in development of policies/procedures/educational courses preferred
  • Previous experience in a residential camping program as either general or medical/nursing staff preferred

Strong communication, presentation, and organizational skills. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Requires excellent attention to detail, strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to prioritize competing priorities in a complex environment. Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, and occasional weekends, holidays, and nights.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
PALS, BLS, ACLS, CPHON/CPON Certifications Desired.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Excel. Proficiency in database software is a plus.
