Summary:  The Adventure Program Lead Facilitator is directly involved in the delivery of the Summer Adventure program. Additionally, the position is ultimately responsible for the safety and quality of the Adventure experience.  The incumbent will be lead in Safety on all Adventure activities and supervises and supports Adventure volunteers (including the Alpine Tower Ropes Course).

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and provide leadership in the execution of a challenging and fun Adventure Program experience for the campers.
    • Meet Camp outcomes for each participant in the execution of the Adventure program.
    • Maintain or exceeds American Camp Association accreditation standards in the delivery of the program.
    • Assist in the design, preparation, and documentation of operation, safety and emergency procedures for camp activities as assigned.
    • Provide the Program Director mid-season and end-of-the-season recommendations for program improvements.
  • Support and Supervise Adventure Volunteer Counselors.
    • Leads Adventure Planning meetings at each session
    • Insures that Volunteer Adventure Counselors are working within their individual level of competency
    • Provide volunteer orientation and training in roles, responsibilities, program safety and emergency procedures.
    • Conduct and document weekly goal setting meetings, performance observations and performance evaluations for each volunteer Adventure staff member.
  • Maintain Program Safety
    • Identify and report potential risks/ hazards related to the operation of the Camp program experience.
    • Enforce established safety practices, regulations, emergency procedures and appropriate camper/staff supervision ratios.
    • Knowledge of Adventure program safety rules and emergency procedures
    • Lead response in an emergency situation
    • Ability to be trained to perform a high course rescue when needed
    • Ability to perform an emotional rescue when needed
    • Conduct routine checks of program areas and equipment for safety, cleanliness and good repair.
    • Insure first aid equipment is available and in good repair
    • Completes all necessary forms and reports
  • Equipment and Supplies
    • Oversee equipment use and maintain accurate inventories
    • Responsible for the cleaning & organizing of Adventure shed and equipment before, during and after summer season.
    • Assist Volunteer Adventure Staff in daily checks of equipment for safety, cleanliness and good condition.
    • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment
  • Member of the Program Leadership Team
    • Attend leadership meetings with other directors and activity staff
    • Assist in the set-up and implementation of other activities as assigned

Education and Work Experience

  • At least 21 years of age
  • At least 3 years of outdoor recreation program experience with supervisory duties
  • High School Diploma or GED

Knowledge and Skills

  • Training and experience in being the lead facilitator on an Alpine Tower is preferable.
  • Training and experience in Adventure programming and program management.
  • Strong understanding of recreational Adventure programs within the special needs community.  Knowledge of and experience in the delivery of recreational Adventure programs and youth development competencies and strategies
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other management staff, employees, volunteers and the general public
  • Strong organizational skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to deliver results in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekdays, weekends, holidays and nights.
  • Available to complete all Adventure training prior to summer and to live & work onsite at Camp from early June (open to a Memorial Day weekend start) – end of August

  • Holds or able to hold First Aid / CRP certificates

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret general business periodicals and professional journals.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, board members, families and the general public.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
